"First let me tell you that there is nothing like my wonderful Vita-Mix. Last October my blood pressure zoomed up. The doctor said that I had to lose weight or I was heading for a heart attack. So I embarked on an exercise and weight loss program. My Vita-Mix played a key role. I could easily make fresh veggie soup, drinks and smoothies."
15% of modern prescription drugs are laboratory imitations of phytochemicals that occur naturally in whole fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes. Food prepared in the Vita-Mix machine delivers 100% of these health-enhancing nutrients that are stripped away in refined and processed foods.
The 2005 USDA Dietary Guidelines and what it means to you.
Every five years, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Health and Human Services Department take a fresh look at American health, eating habits and what is commonly called the “food pyramid” or MyPyramid.
The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee includes thirteen medical and nutrition experts who evaluated the latest scientific findings to make their recommendations.
They found that specific diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, and certain cancers are linked to poor diet and physical inactivity.
A basic premise of the 2005 USDA Dietary Guidelines is that nutrient needs should be met primarily through consuming foods.
Dietary supplements, while recommended in some cases, cannot replace a healthful diet to assure a long, vibrant life.
These are key recommendations from the 70-page scientific document.
Consume a sufficient amount of fruits and vegetables. Two cups of fruit and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables per day are recommended as part of a 2,000-calorie diet.
Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables each day. In particular, select from all five vegetable subgroups (dark green, orange, legumes, starchy vegetables, and other vegetables) several times a week.
Consume 6 or more servings of grain products per day, with at least half the grains coming from whole grains.
Consume 3 cups per day of fat-free or low-fat milk or equivalent milk products.
Keep total fat intake between 20 to 35 percent of calories, with most fats coming from sources of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, and vegetable oils.
